How Does Physiotherapy Help?
Physiotherapy is the most widely available of all the manipulation techniques
used to help muscles and joints and other parts of the body work to their full
potential. The basic aim of physiotherapy is to alleviate pain and restore normal
movement and function patterns to help return the body to its natural state.
Physiotherapists work in a wide variety of health settings such as intensive
care, mental illness, stroke recovery, occupational health, and care of the elderly.
Physiotherapists treat a vast range of conditions from asthma to incontinence
and heart disease as well as a myriad of sports injuries. Physiotherapy can generally
assist anyone who has been incapacitated for any length of time, and can be highly
beneficial during and after pregnancy.
Physiotherapists will help you by adopting a hands on approach;
however, they will also help you to help yourself by showing you simple techniques
which can, and indeed should, be used at home.
Obviously, prior to any treatment being given a full and thorough examination
will take place. It is also worth remembering that physiotherapists do not use
drugs or give injections. They simply use time-honoured methods which have proved
successful over many years. You may see various items of high-tech equipment
in a physiotherapy department. Ultimately, however, their basic tools are their
hands.
